Sunday Morning I ran my 6th Half Marathon, it was also the first time that this wasn’t the main event but a training run for the Philadelphia Marathon in November. This totally changed the dynamic for me, there were parts I MADE myself slow down and others where I didn’t push like I normally would. I knew this race was going to be hot and humid but I was not prepared for HOW humid!
My alarm went off at 5:20am and Sarah and I were dressed and out the door to find breakfast by 5:50am. I was rather energetic and not nervous. We found a Starbucks nearby and got bagels and I got a coffee. Then we had a 1 mile walk to the start.
Once we arrived we jumped in the porta potty line and waited for a LONG TIME, the first few corrals had even begun running by the time it was our turn!
We made these ” I decided to go for a little run- Forrest Gump” shirts last week on Spread shirt , which I order from all the time and love their stuff, very high quality. When they came the size I ordered was too big so I went out and bout hem tape and iron it into the seams to bring the shirts in a total of an inch and a half.
You can see it most in the armpit area!
Anyway, back to the race! We hopped into our corral and within a few minutes we were running!
We ran the first mile together pretty comfortably at around an 11:00 min/mile. By mile 2 I was pulling forward and Sarah was having trouble with the humidity and told me to run ahead, so I did.
Once we separated I went out a little too quick and ran a few miles in the 9:30 min/mile range, which I can do easily on short runs but I haven’t been working to maintain that in longer runs, so I had to REALLY force myself to SLOW DOWN.
By mile 6 The humidity was winning, big time. I thought i was closer to mile 8 then I was 6 for some reason! NOT COOL! Once I got to mile 8 I was walking though water stations, taking one cup to dump on my head, one cup down my back and one cup down my throat! I drank Gatorade at most stations too which upset my stomach a bit but I do need to start adding Gatorade to my training now that all of my long runs are over 12 miles from here on out.
My body was never in pain during this run which was WONDERFUL but the humidity just made me feel heavy and SLOW despite pushing through.
By mile 11 I was taking a few short walking breaks here and there and even went on facebook to post
RIGHT after I posted this I came to a water station giving out ICE COLD SPONGES! WHAT AN AMAZING INGENIOUS IDEA!! I was allllll over it!
This gave me a boost of energy I needed to pick it up! I don’t think even a half mile later I ran through a cheering section of spectators spraying us with hoses and giving out ICEE pops! OMG, whoever you are, I love you for that!
This gave me another awesome boost I needed, and with less then 2 miles to go! The end wasn’t easy but it was terrible either. My body was a little shaky at this point and I was pretty nauseous. I am glad I was able to take it easier in this race and just have fun! I ran across the finish line hands in the air, smiling.
I ended up finishing in 2:26:58 Unofficial and 2:26:52 Official, I think this is actually my slowest half marathon ever… haha
At miles 10 and 12 I had seen a man and woman on the ground surrounded by medics, probably overheated and dehydrated! I kept thinking that I am stubborn enough, that if I had had a goal time in mind and forced myself to run faster that could have been me, I did NOT give this race everything I had and I am 100% ok with that!
I waited for Sarah in the finishers shoot and once we met back up we grabbed popsicles, Gatorade and pretzels and headed to the grass to stretch for a bit.
Once we headed back to the room we showered because I literally smelled RANK and then hit the beach. I have what looks like welts on my stomach! I don’t even know how they got there though! My running skirt band was lower then this and my running belt is lower too! They BURNED when I washed them in the shower.
Every Race should end with beach nap.
We both fell asleep for a bit before grabbing lunch. We walked to a local pizza shop, it didn’t have the best options but we were so hungry we didn’t care at that point. I ordered a Greek Salad and Onion Rings. The salad was so BLAH and hardly greek with a couple black olives and a few chunks of feta.
When we got back to the room and showered again, we tested out our new 110% products
They are seriously great and I want to live in them!!! They are so soft and go on easier then my other compression socks. First you put on the black compression socks and then you pull over the white sleeve, after freezing the ice packs, you slide them in-between the black sock and white sleeve. They stay cold for SO LONG and it just feels wonderful!
We eventually ended up going to the Third Eye Blind Post race party around 9pm.
We hadn’t had dinner yet so we walked back to our hotel checking out menus. There is SO MUCH SEAFOOD and so little everything else, with myself being Vegetarian and Sarah being a picky eater we couldnt find a place that we both wanted to eat at so we ended up back at the room ordering from a pizza place at 1:00am! I got a cheese sandwich….
I checked my steps for the day and blew away every other day!
502% of my move goal! 50,000+ STEPS! ohhh yeeaaaaa
